Our careers education and guidance provision aims to prepare the students for the vast range of opportunities open to them for their future and the changing nature of the world of work.
Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of themselves, their strengths and skills to assist them in their future choices on leaving school.
Mrs Nicola Ruby, the Careers Advisor provides specialist careers and higher education support and guidance within school as well as assisting with the PSHE lessons.
Mrs Ruby is available for interviews with students in Year 9-13. Each student is given the opportunity to have an individual interview to discuss their options. Parents are well to attend if they wish.
Within the PSHE programme students participate in careers related activities. External speakers from universities and employers enrich the programme and inform students of the opportunities available to them. Each October we hold a careers convention in conjunction with Bournemouth School and Talbot Heath School. Over 50 exhibitors from universities, further education and employers are present. All students in year 10 have the opportunity to undertake a two week work placement which gives them an excellent insight into the world of work. Employer visits and industry led activities take place within the curriculum and enhance individual subject areas.
Whilst the majority of Year 11 students move into the sixth form, we ensure we help them explore the different post 16 opportunities through PSHE.
In sixth form students receive further help and advice through their complementary studies programme. The programme includes talks from external speakers representing universities and employers with lessons on employability skills and preparation for higher education. Experienced staff are on hand every step of the way to guide students through the application process for UCAS, apprenticeships and employment. This includes advice on personal statements and practice interviews.
